HEMLOCK ELONGATE SCALE - Fiorinia externa is generally found on hemlock but can also be found on douglas fir, yew and spruce. This armored scale is cigar shaped. The small, male scale is white with an orange circle at one side. The larger female is a reddish orange color. There is no set cycle of reproduction; all stages are present during the active season. Because of this control is very difficult. It is thought to have a large emergence of crawlers around May. Treatment with horticultural oil may reduce populations if applied at that time. Monitoring for the crawlers is necessary for applications to be effective. Systemic insecticide applications may also be effective.
