TULIP TREE SCALE ON MAGNOLIA
- The arrow is pointing to the young "crawlers"of
the tulip tree scale. The large bump attached to the twig is an adult tulip
tree scale. Tulip Tree Scale , Toumeyella liriodendri can
be found on Linden, tulip poplar and magnolia. Infestation can cause
weakened condition of plants and reduces vigor and growth. Heavy infestations
may kill trees, young trees and branches on older trees.
The female scale is hemispherical and dark chocolate brown in color. Usually
the scales are symmetrical, but shape varies in crowded
populations. Immature stages complete development in spring, mature,
and give live birth in late August. The old females then fall from the plant. The young develop
to the second stage and then become dormant until the
following spring. There is one generation per year. Sprays
should be applied in late August and two weeks later for crawlers, or in late
March or early April with superior dormant oil for over-wintering
immatures.
