Whitefly - Although whitefly is mainly a greenhouse pest in this area there are a few species that are found on rhododendrons and azaleas. These insects are small, white and are easily noticed flying off the plant when disturbed. They are found on the undersides of the leaves and their feeding can give the leaf surface a spotty yellow color. They can cause the leaf margin to curl under when feeding in great numbers. Many times a black sooty mold is found growing on the underside of the leaf surface as a result of the accumulation of sugary excrement (honeydew) of whiteflies. Eggs and nymphs of the whiteflies can be found with closer inspection of the leaves. They are small, white and oval shaped. Horticultural oil can be applied if the population is greatly effecting the health of the plant.
